In 2003 Scott Yen came up with an idea – why not mount an aquarium to the wall and make it look like a picture? After all this is what flat TV makes just did recently. He figured out that the 4 inch tank would hold about 6 galons of water – just enough for most aquarium fish species.

The only problem was that Scott was an investment banker, not an engineer. So he and his dad set out to find a way to turn his idea into a product. $150,000 and a year later they figured out a way to produce wall aquariums, filed for a patent and incorporated. Next year (2005) they found a manufacturer in China and business took off.

The company now sells about $1.5 million a year worth of “picquariums”, including Europe and Middle East. Oh, and Scott Yen is no longer an investment banker.
